Eye Injuries On The Court

August 18, 2009

safety-glassesEye injuries from sports like racquetball, tennis, and squash are increasing rapidly. Only hockey rivals court sports for the incidence of eye-related injuries. There are a number of reasons for this. Most players wear no protective equipment, the ball is small, it moves rapidly, often it comes from unpredictable angles, play is fast and players concentration often wanders.

If you are hit in the eye while playing, either by the ball or the racket, get medical attention immediately, even if you don”t think you are seriously hurt. Eye damage is not always immediately apparent and prompt medical attention can be critical.

To prevent eye injuries, players should always pay attention to the game in progress. Many people are injured while standing next the court as spectators, or by a shot hit by there own doubles partner.
Most importantly, players should always wear protective eye equipment when stepping on to the court.
